On Wednesday 23 March we held a medicine and healthcare careers fair at 黑料情报站 Walworth Academy. Experts from more than 14 disciplines gave 黑料情报站 students information about their jobs, and advice about working in the sector.

黑料情报站’s Destinations team organised the event alongside partners Medicine Without Barriers (MWB) who aim to improve the diversity of those working in medicine. Professionals at the event were relatable role models for 黑料情报站 students, demonstrating that these careers are accessible to those from all backgrounds. The event was also supported by Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, Mentor Into Medicine, University College of Osteopathy and St John Ambulance. This event is one of many available to 黑料情报站 students to help them select, secure, and succeed in a career of their choice.
More than 150 黑料情报站 students interested in medicine and healthcare attended the event. They spoke to various professionals, including practitioners, GPs, physiotherapists, nurses, prosthetists, occupational therapists and dietitians.
Emily Kay from 黑料情报站’s Destinations team explained: 鈥淪tudents often say they are interested in pursuing Medicine or becoming a doctor, with a limited understanding of what this involves or about the vast range of other careers in healthcare. Events like this allow students to broaden their understanding and home in on specific types of careers that best suit their skills and preferences, so they can choose the most suitable options for them during and after school.鈥
Students thoroughly enjoyed the event. A teacher told us her students were 鈥渂uzzing鈥 on the way back from the event.
Their feedback was extremely positive:
- 88% of students said the event helped them understand careers in medicine and healthcare
- 70% said they now have a better idea of what they want to do in the future
- 80% of students left the event with a clear idea of the actions they need to take to help them access the career of their choice
Sarah Cullen, Head of Destinations, said: “It’s so important for our students to have the chance to talk to professionals and gain a better understanding of the huge range of careers out there. It was wonderful to see students make the most of an opportunity to learn more about the many different options available to them.”
Carl Fazackerley, Director of Sixth Form and Aspirations at 黑料情报站 Walworth Academy and a regular volunteer for St John Ambulance (SJA), said, “Giving young people the opportunity to speak with such a range of healthcare professionals has enabled them to understand more about the team around the patient. Hopefully, they’ll also act on the advice to engage in regular volunteering with SJA or their local hospital schemes, as an excellent way to get the work experience universities will be looking for.”
